My 8-year-old son is just getting into comics and we went here. I know nothing! The staff member talked to my son without infantilizing him and we went home with some cool comics. More importantly, my son felt like he was let into a world of books and knowledge.

JD has so much stuff in his store you can't even begin to know what you want to buy there is so much memorabilia it's crazy amazing customer service bought myself a shirt made me feel like fams.

Always freindly staff, great selection of video games to play, nice recommendations for new and experienced readers alike, great prices, and centrally located. What's not to love?

Amazing folks with even more amazing stuff. Aside from nerding out over an amazing selection of comics, the merch is also super cool. A shirt I absolutely needed was not available in my size and Johnny printed it right on the spot so I didn't have to wait for the next run! I'm going to add Hero Complex to my splurge rotation. Love it!

One of the things I miss most about being in Philly is being able to walk down to JD's shop and get a recommendation for a book I had no idea existed but would end up loving. The selection of books is great and the community events like the book club are a great way to get into comics and meet new friendly people.

The best. Really fun stuff and here, and the dude knows what the heck is up. I say I like this, he says oh try this. I say what about this and he explains everything without spoilers because he cares about my adventure into the comics. The dude knows whats up.

Stopped in to JDs a couple a years ago to peak into the world of comics for the first time during a low period of the MCU right after getting sucked in to it. We havent looked back.

Walked in thinking Id pick up a Batman and an Ironman and go on my way but I picked up so much more. I had never read a comic book before, and every question I had was answered and provided me with the best guidance to get what I was looking for.

Rae and JD are always filled to the brim with recommendations that are right for you and your expectations/descriptions. Sometimes Ill just spew out a sentence of adjectives of what Im looking for, and theyre right there with the answer.

They have SO many trades and single issues to browse, and whatever they dont have theyre happy to special order. I mostly appreciate that they dont call you when they arrive, theyll text (no, Im not joking, I really love it) Theyve also got shirts, Art prints, magnets, stickers if youre not in the mood for a book.

Ill go out of my way not to order from online retailers just so I can go in and get recommendations, browse and find my new favorite thing on the shelf.

Beyond thankful and lucky to have such a kind, knowledgeable and characteristic shop in our area.

If you live in the Manayunk/Roxborough area and are a comic book fan, you should be getting your pull list from here. After moving to Philly from NY, I found it really hard to find a shop to go to consistently. I'm so happy one opened up around here. What's better is that the owner is an unbelievably nice guy. If there is something you're looking for, he will go out of his way to try and find it online. If he missed something in your list, he will make sure you get it the following week.

What makes this shop so incredible is the atmosphere created. A majority of comic book readers are always trying to find a place to congregate and just come together and bond over our shared interests. This is the place to do that.

This is an excellent little comic book store. I was just visiting Philly for the weekend and I decided to check out all the comic book stores around the city. This is the first one that I stopped at and it didn't disappoint. The owner was extremely friendly and he recommended to me an awesome comic called Batman: White Knight which I can't wait to dive into. He had a little bit of everything. For years I had been searching for a store that I felt welcomed. After moving to Manayunk 2 years ago I couldnt believe in finally found one. JD has built an outstanding store and an even better community of comic fans from all backgrounds and walk of life. I walked in scared to tell him I didnt like a lot of female portrayals in comics and he showed me how there is tons of awesome content that I can read instead of the Marvel and DC stuff I was used to. This shop is awesome! The ownerJDis friendly and will put in special orders for anything not in stock and gives great requests, to boot. There are a lot of queer-friendly comics for all ages which is wonderful to see! Its also an easily accessible shop for folks with wheelchairs, unlike one or two others Ive been to in the city (no stairs, has double doors that open plenty wide).

This shop is so fun and the owner, JD, is such a great guy. We ended up staying at chatting with him for a little while and walked out with King of Tokyo. They truly have something for everyone here. My fianc and I cant wait to go back next time were in Manayunk!

I've been going to JD's Hero Complex for about 3 or 4 years. I've seen him interact with all types of people and, no matter who they are, he always does it with a smile. JD is always accommodating and he never fails to try to help people with what they need whether it be through ordering books or giving good recommendations. I was so excited to not only be supporting a small local business, but a local artist as well. Didn't buy all the shirts I wanted- ain't made of money. But I did snag a couple stickers from the register to satisfy my urge. Hope to visit Johnny Destructo's on my next Philly adventure.

This place is awesome! I've been driving 30 minutes to get downtown when there's a much better place right in manayunk. JD really knows his stuff, and all the customers are comic lovers very open to recommendations. My boyfriend and I went here just to stop in and ended up walking away with great recommendations and an overall amazing experience. There's a pretty good inventory and he's always willing to order whatever you're looking for. I would recommend for anyone to go here!

This place is simply the best! The only comics store in the general Manayunk area and really the only one you should even consider. The store owner JD is the sweetest, coolest, and most knowledgeable guy! He has a fantastic pop culture collection of comics, figures, and shirts and if he doesn't have what you're looking for he can do a pick-up order for you right to his store. He's also a very talented artist and sells his own shirts and prints! He will do commissions and from the pet portraits and specialty prints I've seen, he would be the perfect go-to artist if you're looking for a unique gift idea! He has recommended so many great writers and comics to me so if you're in Manayunk be sure to stop by and say hi!

I've been going to JD's Hero Complex for about 3 or 4 years. I've seen him interact with all types of people and, no matter who they are, he always does it with a smile. JD is always accommodating and he never fails to try to help people with what they need whether it be through ordering books or giving good recommendations. He's also one of the kindest people I know and anyone in the Philadelphia area would be crazy not to check him out.

Excellent selection, cute store, and an owner with a passion for comics that is only surpassed by his delightful charm. JD helped me find what I was looking for and pointed me in the direction of new material that I didn't know I was missing out on. He's never pushy and never makes you feel bad for browsing. Lovely place all around!!

This place is awesome! I went in there looking for 2 graphic novels but they were sold out so the owner ordered them for me and sent them directly to my house, he also makes awesome t shirts, I ended up buying a baby yoda shirt for my girlfriend and she constantly gets compliments on it and everyone asking where she got it. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that's a comic book fan and just all around nerd like me lol the owner is a super helpful guy and will try his best to get anything for you ????????

Wonderful shop, the owner is warm, knowledgeable, and engaging. I just got into comics and I named one I was reading and he rapid fired so many things that were similar that I would like. I’m disappointed we didn’t come here more (had been in a few other times). His tshirts are amaze balls too!!! Get your butt in here :)

Incredible experience at Jd’s! I was going in to by a birthday gift for my brother who is a huge marvel fan. Jd gave me a couple great suggestions and we landed on a commission art piece that he did, and I couldn’t be happier with it. His management skills and customer service skills are top notch!

I will be a customer for life. I have already been back to pick up the art piece and some reading that he recommended!

Awesome shop! The customer service was friendly and helpful! We are always looking for more dice and comics. Ended up buying a collection of comics for my daughter and two sets of dice. The shop was clean and cool. Definitely recommend stopping in just to check things out!

My favorite place to shop for comics. Owner is welcoming and gives great recommendations and will order anything you need into the store that they don't have in stock. Has a great selection of LGBT+ books for kids and adults. They've also got some cool monthly events with a real nice crowd of folks who attend regularly.

We loved this place and plan to go regularly. I took in my queer tween and the enby employee there showed them everything queer. They talked about all kinds of things and it was really welcoming. Kiddo got a subscription to a new comic and is super excited about reading all of the comics!

For years I had been searching for a store that I felt welcomed. After moving to Manayunk 2 years ago I couldn’t believe in finally found one. JD has built an outstanding store and an even better community of comic fans from all backgrounds and walk of life. I walked in scared to tell him I didn’t like a lot of female portrayals in comics and he showed me how there is tons of awesome content that I can read instead of the Marvel and DC stuff I was used to. Stop in and strike up a conversation! JD is awesome and will always find something up your alley.

This shop is awesome! The owner—JD—is friendly and will put in special orders for anything not in stock and gives great requests, to boot. There are a lot of queer-friendly comics for all ages which is wonderful to see! It’s also an easily accessible shop for folks with wheelchairs, unlike one or two others I’ve been to in the city (no stairs, has double doors that open plenty wide).

Just moved into the area and found this amazing shop. It has so much great stuff, the original art on the t-shirts and stickers is really good and hilarious!

It also has a lot going on, game nights and monthly book club, so freakin awesome!!!

Love this place..small but a well stocked comic book shelf new and old..excellent customer service..plus it has become my new 1 stop comic shop forget south street or the one on samson street..this is where I'm going for now on for my comic books..i asked them could they hold something for and put something aside for me and they did no problem .. try doing that at the South st. comic book store and they'll look at you like they want to punch you in your face

Sweet little comic, graphic novel, and merch shop with a deceptively large collection. All I had to do was say "hello" and I suddenly had a great new graphic novel in my hands.

This is an excellent little comic book store. I was just visiting Philly for the weekend and I decided to check out all the comic book stores around the city. This is the first one that I stopped at and it didn't disappoint. The owner was extremely friendly and he recommended to me an awesome comic called Batman: White Knight which I can't wait to dive into. He had a little bit of everything. I highly recommend stopping by here if you're visiting Philly or if you live here. It's an excellent little shop.

If you live in the Manayunk/Roxborough area and are a comic book fan, you should be getting your pull list from here. After moving to Philly from NY, I found it really hard to find a shop to go to consistently. I'm so happy one opened up around here. What's better is that the owner is an unbelievably nice guy. If there is something you're looking for, he will go out of his way to try and find it online. If he missed something in your list, he will make sure you get it the following week.

What makes this shop so incredible is the atmosphere created. A majority of comic book readers are always trying to find a place to congregate and just come together and bond over our shared interests. This is the place to do that.

While I've always been interested in comic books and graphic novels, I only recently really began reading them. In the past, the comic book shops I visited were pretty intimidating. This is not the case with JD's.

The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. You don't have to worry about any elitism or snobby attitudes. Everyone is super patient and happy to help you find whatever you're looking for.

The shop is the perfect size. JD's selection is big enough to fit anyone's taste without being overwhelming. He carries all the essential series from Marvel, DC, and Image along with a ton of indie comics. He's clearly put a lot of thought into maintaining a curated collection while being more than willing to special order comics for his customers.

My favorite part of JD's though is the community. You'll find a wide range of customers hanging out at his shop from people who've been reading comics for decades to those just getting into the hobby. Everyone there is always friendly and the atmosphere is really inviting. JD also hosts a ton of events including a monthly book club and game night. They are a great place to get together and talk about comic books and play some games with a great crowd of people.

JD's Hero Complex is without a doubt my favorite comic book shop. It's a great shop wether you love comics, are just getting into the hobby, or just want to meet some friendly people.

Not only is JD incredibly knowledgable about any comic book/movie/tv show/anything-even-remotely-related-to-pop-culture that you could ever want to discuss, he's also the least pretentious/most genuine person I've ever met. Johnny Destructo's Hero Complex echoes this: it's warm, inviting, fun, and filled with a wide selection of graphic novels, comic books, t-shirts, original artwork, and accessories.

On top of the array of merchandise available in his shop, JD is building the creative community around him by hosting monthly figure drawing and game nights that all are encouraged to attend (even if you can't figure draw, like me). The passion and dedication that JD has for his shop is evident. He should feel proud of everything he's accomplished in such a short amount of time--and you should definitely check it out!

Great store, great guy. Had no idea what I wanted walking in, but a few minutes in there and I had a stack of comics. Just finished them and now I have to go back for more.

They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. If you miss a subscription they will order a new one and have it in by the next week. The owner is great and very knowledgeable, I would highly recommend.

JD is such a nice person. His shop is fantastic but my favorite part of it is it has a community. I adore that everyone who likes comics/graphic novels/art books on main street goes to JD for their comic subscriptions, novel releases, and cute goodies. The shop is little, but very comfortable to be in. JD may be physic because he knows when to leave you alone and when to help you out and any of his employees/friends have adopted this gentle attitude to book browsing. Half his business is ordering stuff for you - so if you think about it, the shop has EVERYTHING.

JD Is a rad dude. Recommended some cool places to eat, and pointed out some cool things to do in Manayunk. The store has a good selection with an option to subscribe for your favorite comics. Definitely worth returning and supporting the place.

This place is simply the best! The only comics store in the general Manayunk area and really the only one you should even consider. The store owner JD is the sweetest, coolest, and most knowledgeable guy! He has a fantastic pop culture collection of comics, figures, and shirts and if he doesn't have what you're looking for he can do a pick-up order for you right to his store. He's also a very talented artist and sells his own shirts and prints! He will do commissions and from the pet portraits and specialty prints I've seen, he would be the perfect go-to artist if you're looking for a unique gift idea! He has recommended so many great writers and comics to me so if you're in Manayunk be sure to stop by and say hi!

I'm not as "into" this stuff as JD's regulars, but I have had the chance to peruse his offerings and they're AWESOME! Really cool stuff! My one and only comic shop!!! Not only is he one of the nicest and warmest fellas I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, but JD is probably the most knowledgable guy I know when it comes to comics and super helpful when you need to find what you're looking for. The monthly events held at the shop are always great fun, and you honestly won't find a better or more inclusive community of nerds than the folks who gather here.

My husband and I moved to Manayunk a few months ago and needed to find our new local shop. The first time we visited JD greeted us like old friends. He's great at giving recommendations and their events are so fun. I always know that whenever I visit I'll have a great time (and walk out with some fantastic comics).

I love this place! I always go out of my way to stop in and say hello and pick up new additions.

This place rocks! I'm just getting into comics as an adult. JD is full of info for the novice and can order you whatever you want.

To put it simply, JD is amazing. When we moved into the neighborhood almost two years ago we were ecstatic that there was a comic book shop nearby. Since then we've grown to be friends and love stopping by to pick up our subscriptions, let our puppy say hi to one of her favorite people, or just to see what's new and going on. Though we haven't had the chance to join in on any of his events, we'll be attending his Board Game Night this month and are positive it will be a blast.

He truly knows his stuff and is always happy to help both comic nerds and those new to a fandom find the right item. Not to mention he's always happy to get an item in if he doesn't currently have it, much like he did at Christmas time when I wanted to get my sister her first graphic novels (DC Superhero Girls vol. 1 and 2).

Overall Hero Complex is a friendly shop that we love bringing all our friends to when they come to visit, many of which asking to return when they come back (most live in South Jersey). I'd recommend a visit to anyone and only hope for his business to continue to thrive.

I've known JD for many years since he worked at Comics and More at the King of Prussia mall. I was thrilled to hear he was opening his own shop in Manayunk, and since I recently moved to Germantown - I knew I had to transfer my subscriptions to his shop!

While the shop is small, he has a great selection of single issues and trades, shirts, and even original art. He even hosts events (I'm looking forward to attending a "Drink n' Draw" sometime soon)!

I've been to a number of unfriendly comic book stores where the staff grunts at you for "not being a real comic book fan" or assume "you must only like comics because of the movies." That's not JD's Hero Complex - it's a welcoming atmosphere for intimidated newcomers and avid comic book readers, alike! JD really brings a personal touch that is missing from a lot of comic shops! I went there today and they had almost everything i wanted but what they din't have they ordered for me.

After years of not being interested in comic books, I stumbled into Hero Complex after a few drinks on Main St, and met the truly knowledgeable and caring Johnny Destructo. JD's knowledge and welcoming personality made me feel like a friend was recommending comics, I'm a fan of gritty realistic comics, and JD was able to name multiple crime themed comics off the top of his head, and not a single one of them(Rattler, We Can Never Go Home, Criminal) disappointed me. I was just in there tonight. I met the owner JD and his wife, and instantly struck up a conversation about movies and comics and music. Not a far stretch for topics to be discussed in a comic store, but my point is, if you can meet someone for the first time and instantly chat it up with them as easily as I did, they're the kind of people who deserves your business.

The shop was smaller than you'd expect a comic shop to be, but I asked about two very different trade books from years ago and he had both, so don't let the lack of shelves upon shelves fool you. Also, he has a artwork done by himself on the walks for sale. I really had my eye on a Deadpool he drew but I spent way too much money today, perhaps I'll try back in a few weeks to snatch it up if it's still there.

It's a little hidden towards the far end of Main Street past the music store when most of the bar/restaurant foot traffic lightens up. Make it a point to walk a few more feet and check this place out.
